Kirtipur: In a recent media discussion organized by Tribhuvan University's Central Department of Population Studies, demographers have underscored the need for a systematic and scientific examination of the census index. The goal is to tackle the growing issues of demographic imbalance and migration, offering insights crucial for future development planning.

During the discussion, experts emphasized that authorities must possess a deep understanding of the population to formulate effective development plans aligned with the country's demographic realities. Professor Dr. Yogendra Gurung, the head of the department, stressed the shift from population control to population management as a necessary step.

According to Dr. Gurung, a comprehensive study of the population is vital for informed decision-making in economic, social, and political policy domains. Dr. Padma Prasad Khatiwada, a reader at the department, highlighted the heightened significance of population education in light of the rapid outflow of young and skilled human resources and the dynamic demographic fluctuations.

The Central Department of Population Studies, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration, is currently conducting a two-week intensive training program. This initiative targets population scholars, government officials, and individuals involved in diplomatic activities.

The program also shared noteworthy achievements, revealing that over 2,300 individuals have earned master's degrees, 182 have obtained MPhil degrees, and 19 have successfully completed Ph.D. programs at the Central Department of Population Studies. The department, established in 2045 under the Faculty of Humanities and Sociology at Tribhuvan University, continues to play a pivotal role in advancing population studies in the region.
